Ebooks

I just finished reading Edgar Rice Burroughs’ A Princess of Mars, the first of his Martian Series. I came across it merely because it was the oldest book published on Standard Ebooks. Turns out it’s a great proto-science fiction novel that’s an easy captivating read that’s part western, part love story, and part sci-fi action adventure.

I say all that because reading is a key part of what leisure means to me, and leisure is a key part of what being human means to me. One of the many reasons I made this blog was to chronicle and reflect on my various leisure pursuits, and this happened to be one proximate to its creation.

To keep this post brief, I plan on loading up my Kobo Aura One (yes, I use an 8-year-old ereader) with the oldest book on Standard Ebooks every time I finish a title or get bored and just plow through them. What’s great about Standard Ebooks is they produce high quality editions of works confirmed to be in the public domain in the United States of America. Project Gutenberg is great, but when a title exists on Standard Ebooks, it makes a huge difference in quality. Knowing the Ebooks are in the Public Domain in the United States also helps avoid inadvertently violating copyright while still getting a high-quality publication for free.

There are a number of other things I’m currently reading and want to read. I also want to talk about managing a library of Ebooks either manually or with something like calibre, but this is everything I wanted to say here. Stay tuned!
